Wilde Without The Boy/The Ballad of Reading Gaol
“...The gods had given me almost everything…genius…brilliancy, intellectual daring...I summed up all systems in a phrase, and all existence in an epigram.”
Oscar Wilde
“Wilde Without the Boy” is a dramatisation of “De Profundis”, the letter Oscar Wilde wrote from his prison cell in Reading gaol to his lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, after Wilde had been imprisoned for acts of gross indecency with other males.
Performed by Gerard Logan, who will also be reading “The Ballad of Reading Gaol”. Written by Oscar Wilde after his release prison, this poem narrates the execution of Charles Thomas Wooldridge, convicted of murdering his wife.
