Changelings (or Dorian)

Changelings or Dorian

By Andrew McMillan and Helen Mort

The idea of the Changeling, the idea of a fairy child left in place of a stolen human child, feels very relevant today when we think of ideas of identity, virtual selves and the crisis in contemporary masculinity. The self that feels that it is not the self, the self that feels somehow estranged from an idealised version of the self. In the world of social media; the selfie, the avatar, the airbrushed image, who are we really?

Taking inspiration from the myth of Narcissus and Echo, Wilde’s Dorian Gray and the folklore of changeling children, Proper Job Theatre Company, Andrew McMillan explores the monsters we imagine we see in the mirror and the airbrushed image we project.
